Biology and Biomedical Sciences
9th grade and above

Who should take this course?
Students of grade 9 and above are taking a school Biology in the fall semester or have already taken one year general Biology; plan to take SAT Biology test or AP Biology exam (for some) in May or early June of the school year; and to get basic understanding how the core biological principles apply to Biomedical Sciences. This course would improve one’s performance in school Biology study.

What does this course do?
The primary objectives of this course include:

1)      Improving students understanding of fundamental biological principles and concepts in contemporary Biology, Cellular and Molecular Biology to improve school performance in Biology study through intensive reviews of the core biological concepts and practice test questions.

2)      Guiding students to proficiently apply these principles to various biological projects, solving problems with effective strategies in SAT Biology test and AP Biology exam (for some). This course would be not only to solidify one’s school Biology study, offer guidance on preparing these tests, but to also integrate the diverse biological topics covered in our daily activities and environments.

3)      Introducing biological real-world applications in biotechnology development, drug discovery, and clinical diagnoses and therapies for human diseases; students will gain a deeper appreciation for the importance of biology and how it affects people’s health and live.

This course would open students’ eyes to the hidden world of biology, engage them to explore the inspiring potential of advanced biomedical engineering, and prepare them for college-level Biology and Biomedical Sciences related academic disciplines.

Reference books:
1) Campbell Biology (10th Edition) by Jane B. Reece, etc.
2) Kaplan SAT Subject Test Biology E/M (2015-2016)
3) AP Biology Exam (2016 Edition) Princeton Review

Teacher's Bio

As a biological educator, Dr. Sun Mei obtained a B.S in Biochemistry (China), a M.S in Cellular and Molecular Biology (France), and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (US). She did her postdoctoral training in Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School (HMS), and has been continued conducting research there. She also worked several years in pharmaceuticals.
Passionate in biological education, Dr. Sun taught college level biology/biochemistry for 6 years prior to moving to US. Over her more than 20 years’ biomedical work in academia and in industry in the US, she has mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students at Harvard University and interns/co-op students at pharmaceuticals.
Additionally, she leads one-on-one biology tutorials and study groups for students of grade 9 and above, at standard college-prep, honors, and advanced placement (AP) levels; and provides guest lectures for the biomedical program at Bunker Hill Community College.
To enrich the content of this biological course, Dr. Sun will invite several biomedical field experts to provide guest lectures to share their professional stories on biological principles apply to medical drug discovery. This course will be not only academically beneficial and rewarding, but also fun and interesting!
